If no property comes up, you may find through the Department of Motor Vehicles that the person has a classic Corvette or a Harley Davidson motorcycle that has been paid off. You can give that information to the local sheriff or marshal, so that he can go and seize them. Law enforcement will come with a tow truck, take his property, and give it to you in satisfaction of the judgment. (Keep in mind that the marshal and the sheriff are not going to do the asset searches for you. You have to do them yourself and say, “Here are the assets. Go get them.” Or you have to engage an investigator to find and retrieve the assets.)

P.I. GLOSSARY

Hidden assets: anything of value that you want to conceal or protect, including items that are not registered, such as cash or jewelry, as well as those that are, including real property, businesses, or bank accounts. Once, I was working a matrimonial case for a wife whose husband was an investment banker, and he told the court that all he had was thirty thousand dollars. I ended up finding twelve million dollars that he was hiding in Vanuatu, an island near Fiji. (They had a season of Survivor there.) When the wife’s attorney went to court and told the judge, “Your honor, we found twelve million dollars,” the husband literally passed out. They had to call the EMTs and get him to the hospital!
